Azaad Movie – Ahead of its January 17 release the teaser for Azaad  which stars Ajay Devgn  Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgn  has created a lot of excitement. Set in pre independence India  initial reviews highlight the films original idea and performances indicating that audiences may expect a satisfying cinematic experience.

Rasha Thadani the daughter of Raveena Tandon is ready to make her Bollywood debut in Azaad  starring Ajay Devgns nephew Aaman Devgn. Since its publication on Monday January 6, the movies trailer has generated a lot of interest among viewers. The 2:43 minute teaser for Azaad which is scheduled for release in theatres next week has garnered a lot of positive feedback from fans  who declared the film is going to be awesome. Plot Summary

Set in pre independence India in the 1920s Azaad  centres on Aaman Devgans debut as Govind a young  stable kid. The mysterious criminal Vikram Singh  portrayed by Ajay Devgn owns a lively black horse named Azaad with which Govind develops a remarkable bond. As Govinds ambition to ride the magnificent horse turns into a journey of bravery and self discovery  their interwoven journey takes place against a backdrop of tyranny and revolt. The story also examines issues of forbidden love and class division  especially as they relate to Govind and Janaki Bahadur who is played by Rasha Thadani and is the daughter of a wealthy landlord.

Cast and Characters

Vikram Singh  played by Ajay Devgn: A fierce criminal who had a strong bond with his horse Azaad. Kesar Bahadur played by Diana Penty  is a strong willed individual caught up in the intricate details of her familys history. Govind played by Aaman Devgan  is a young steady child who embarks on a quest for self discovery and disobedience because of his relationship with Azaad.

Rasha Thadani plays Janaki Bahadur a landlords daughter whose connection with Govind defies social expectations. Tej Bahadur  played by Mohit Malik is Janakis brother whose deeds have a profound effect on the lives of people around him. Rai Bahadur  played by Piyush Mishra  is a wealthy landlord and the father of Tej and Janaki. He symbolises the repressive social systems of the era.

Production Details

Satyajit Pande (Setu) handled the films cinematography  paying close attention to detail while recreating the period specific locations and rural vistas. Amit Trivedi wrote the musical composition  Hitesh Sonik provided the background score and Chandan Arora edited the work. Amitabh Bhattacharya and Swanand Kirkire wrote the soundtracks lyrics which add to the films vivid musical landscape.

Music

Five songs make up the Azaad  soundtrack  and each one adds to the films rich narrative: Ajeeb O Gareeb  This song which is sung by Hansika Pareek and Arijit Singh  explores the quirks of love and life. Arijit Singh and Amit Trivedis inspirational song Azaad Hai Tu focusses on themes of autonomy and self determination. Amit Trivedi and Meenal Jains lively song  Birangay honours the spirit of revolt. Madhubanti Bagchis rendition of Uyi Amma blends traditional melodies with modern rhythms. Amit Trivedis heartfelt performance of  Azaad Hai Tu  (Reprise) offers an alternative emotional interpretation of the original song. On January 10, 2025 the Zed Music Company label published the album.

Release and Reception

January 17, 2025 saw the theatrical release of Azaad. Even though Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadanis debut was much anticipated the movie received mixed to poor reviews from critics. Bollywood Hungama gave the film a 2 out of 5 pointing to its poor script and unimpressive first half as its main flaws.

A more positive assessment was provided by Pinkvilla who gave it a grade of three out of five and suggested it to those who are looking for well made historical works. It received a 3 out of 5 rating from the Times of India as well which praised its grandiose moments but criticised its general lack of emotional and narrative resonance. With a 1.5 out of 5 rating and a focus on the shoddy and fragmented screenplay, NDTV was more negative.

With receipts ranging from ₹9.09 to ₹10 crore against a budget of ₹80 crore Azaad  failed to create a big impression at the box office and was labelled a box office disaster.

On January 6, 2025  the official trailer for Azaad  was unveiled  creating excitement before the films premiere. The trailer received mostly excellent reviews from the public who praised the performers and original idea. While some viewers compared Ajay Devgns performance in Azaad to his one in RRR others praised Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadanis impressive debuts.

Positives: Aaman Devgan and Rasha Thadanis debut performances  every scene with the horse Azaad, the horseback riding scenes  the cinematography Ajay Devgns brief appearance  the soundtracks and the films central themes are all noteworthy.

Whats Bad: A few scenes in the second half quicken the movies pacing certain action scenes seem a little nonsensical  and some supporting characters arent given enough screen time.

Loo Break: For that we recommend the interval itself. If not you will be on the edge of your seat for the entire movie. 

Watch or Not?: Azaad is a charming one time viewing experience with a strong message that leaves an impression.

The goal of Azaad was to create an engaging historical drama with themes of liberation rebellion and self discovery. The picture did well at the box office and in terms of narrative coherence but it struggled in other areas such as its photography and musical score. Rasha Thadani and Aaman Devgan had noteworthy debuts and both performers showed promise for upcoming roles.
